im setting up a ss 38t cog up front with a 12-32 cassette in back, 8 speed.
what size rear derailleur do i need, im guessing 8 speed but what size cage is best etc. also what size chain for this setup. im hoping i dont need a chain guide cos they cost a bomb! but if i do any cheap good ones that could be recomended would be class. cheers folks

My XT short cage says ‘Max 28T’, so I recon a long cage one.
I use a 105 on my road bike with 38T inner ring but that’s with an 11-26 cassette.
I have seen a few medium cage ones on the Bay of Eee, but they all seem to be arse-about-face Rapid Rise ones. 😥
Shouldn’t need a chain guide with a single ring unless you’re using a bracket axle far too long. However, in the unlikely event that you do, a front mech without a cable may be a good option – just tweak this into position with the adjustment screws.
About 98% of Shimano rear mechs are interchangeable and not dependant on 7/8/9 speed cassettes, so that bit’s easy.
Any 7/8 speed chain should fit.

A short cage should work as it’s assuming your running a triple ring set up which makes the change in cogs at the back far larger.
And yeah a front mech fixed in position should do the job.
