my local bike shop has a small 2020 specialized rockhopper comp on 29″ wheels for the standard price £599. this should fit fine as l had a 15″ specialized stumpjumper M2 on 26″ wheels (?) many moons ago which l 99% used on road or gravel trails. l have a choice of choosing this rockhopper comp, even a rockhopper sport or basic rockhopper OR choose the cannondale trail 7. so which would yourselves choose, the cannondale trail 7 which is £450 or pay the extra bucks for the rockhopper comp. l do prefer the look of the specialized rockhoppers to cannondale, but more importantly which is the better bike for the money? is there much of a difference between the 2021 and 2020 rockhopper comp? thanks for your suggestion and comments

They are very, very similar bikes to be honest… I think the most (and almost only) notable difference is that I believe the rochhopper comp is a 2×8 setup whilst the cannondale is a 3×8… Given that you’re only intending to use it on gravel paths etc then the rockhopper may be more suitable… But does that justify the price difference? Not really in my opinion… Both bikes will be perfectly fit for purpose for your requirements.

I think it more boils down to your personal preference in terms of looks, and whether or not you’re willing to drop the extra money on that. I like the cannondale myself & you won’t have any quarms with it I’m sure.

why do you say the rockhopper comp more gravel paths or road orientated? as l believe it has wider tyres 2.3″ v 2.25″ on cannondale. according to https://www.evanscycles.com/brand/cannondale/trail-7-2021-mountain-bike-916912#colcode=91691203 cannondale has a 2×8 set up? ‘Shimano Tourney 16-Speed drivetrain’

for same / similar priced rockhopper and trail, what be 1st and 2nd choice?

is there much of a difference between the 2021 and 2020 rockhopper comp? would it be reasonable to ask for a discount since it is a 2020 that the bike shop has

I was just going off the gearing setup, but you’re right – it appears they’re both 2×8 from that link you posted. If they were both the same price, I’d probably go for the trail… Purely down to personal preference.

Honestly, the bikes are so similar in spec that I don’t believe with whichever purchase you choose to make you are going to be left feeling you made a mistake or wishing you picked the other. It really does appear to just be just more of a case of personal preference (and price) between the two.

And with regards to the discount… The worst they can do is say no, there’s no harm in asking 🙂
