So ive finally got my bike back together and im having trouble with the front mech!!!!

I cant seem to get the outer gear. With maximum throw on the deraillier it just wont go. When the deraillier is at the top position it wont line up with the outer gear. Im wondering if the bottom bracket is a little wide and hence the crankset wont line up. I believe the two bottom brackets looked very similar but i wonder if its possible if its wrong???

If not could i have the wrong deraillier??

Any help would be great as i currently have a 16 speed

this looks like the same crank set I’ve just had all the bother with. It turned out the square taper on the crank wasn’t profiled correctly and wouldn’t sit far enough on to the tapered shaft. Did you get if from chain reaction by any chance?

    Here’s a like to my thred… http://www.mtbe.co.uk/crank-sets-pics-added-t40222.html

Yeah chain reaction. Its all alivio kit the only difference between the two bottom brackets as you can see is the flange of the screw thread to stop it winding through the frame is a little wider.

What did you try new Bottom bracket???

Thanks for the compliment, it was a pretty rubbish bike before, good old ebay description haha. I dont know exactly how much it cost but id have to say near £400. Just need a few little bits to protect the frame. It feels nice even though its only got 16 gears at the mo.

I have managed to get a GT frame so i might build another bike at some point! Id still really like to get a really old hard rock complete bike to rebuild about a 1993.

At the finish, I had tried 3 bb’s. shimano recommended a 113mm length, it was miles out so I tried a 110mm but still no joy so I tried a 107 which was to short and the cranks were rubbing on the bb when seated. The guy at my lbs was really confused by it as it should of went straight on. When I contacted chain reaction about it they told me to dispose of it and gave me a full refund. Which kinda suggest to me they’ve had the problem before.

So ive got this bike still and still cant get the gears right. I might try and file the tapers down as I’m back on the Halfords bottom bracket and it still wont work. I’m 100% its the position of the crank.

Can you do a 2×8 speed bike or a 1×8? Its so flipping annoying.

I did get to use the bike for work for a year but then changed job and wasn’t able to. Trying to sort it to go for ride with the wife and little lady. Its held up well considering its been in a damp shed.
