my place is work is offering a 50-50 cycle to work scheme, i can have a £800 note for £400.. but i already have all the bikes i want.

one of the approved retailers is chain reaction, could i use the cycle to work note for parts/accessories and have a little upgrade or must it be a bike that you buy.

I’m pretty sure they changed the rules a few years ago to allow safety equipment to be included in the deal, i.e. such things as lights, reflective vests, locks, mudgaurds, etc., etc., but I think parts such as gear or brake upgrades are not included as would be any othet parts.

    Choosing my Package

    On this page

Do I need to get a bike with my Certificate?

I already own a bike; can I obtain just accessories through Cyclescheme?

Yes. Your Cyclescheme application can include accessories without the need to include a bike in your request. This can be done by going through the request process in the normal way and when you get to the section titled ‘Package Details’, select ‘Accessory Package’.

You will then be able to enter the exact equipment/accessories you wish to get through the scheme.

i may have to look into this because 50% off is a buddy good deal.

i went threw the online application just to see what it says and if i choose “chain reaction(online)” as my retailer, i dont have to put any info in about what i am buying it just asks for an amount that i am requesting

I thought you could buy stuff like groupsets to rejuvenate an older bike?

with the scheme i was on, in effect we the company bought the bike and i leased it off them paying out of my wages before tax. after a year you had options to give the bike back or carry on leasing until it was nearly paid for. the bike was then valued and a final one off payment was made on a percentage of its value.

sounds like a faff but it worked ok and saved me loads. probably saved me more than most because i am motor trade and we sell finance we were able to set our own price ceiling. I currently have it set at £2000.00 but could go higher at any time.

my point is if you don’t buy a bike how would they do a final valuation.

i was with this scheme https://www.cyclescheme.co.uk/

I may look at ours (a NHS Trust), and see what they offer now

My ‘blue’ Ribble was via our scheme, back in mid-2013

Mmm……………. DuraAce C50 wheels for the Gran Fondo 😀

(or maybe look at a Ribble CR3, to replace the ‘blue’)
