    Right,

Im a noob to all this. On my rides , i’ll usually consume a couple of Mars Bars and a few Bananas and some crisps.

However, i got a CNP Elite Hydro Max Gel through the post to try out and if all goes well, i’ll be wanting more.

So firstly, with a Gel , do you consume it all at once and when do you do it?

Then… Whats the best gel going (price, taste and energy)

Cheers guys. Hope someone can help me out.

Will be needing them as i like going on 40/50/60 mile XC rides πŸ˜€

with the gels, I am pretty sure you need to have it BEFORE you feel tired/dehydrated

have them before and during your ride

I normally just drink lots of water and 1 or 2 energy drinks

How tall are you, how much do you weigh, and what is your average XC speed on your rides, and how hilly would you say they were, lots of long, steep climbs or more gently rolling hills???

    Im 5ft 10 and about 65 Kg’s.

Looking on Strava over a few long 30/50 mile rides, my average speed has been about 11MPH but that includes 3000+ feet of elevation.

The climbs vary, with some hills being very full on and long , slow accsents while other sections being short blasts.

The Tennyson Trail is a 15 mile route that includes some nice rolling hills followed by some steep accents nearer the end. I often tie this trail into other smaller sections and ride around Brighstone Forrest along this trail which includes many shortish trails with steep fire road accents.

I have used Lucozade ones, they have a thick consistency but taste good. At the moment I am using High5 +(caffeine) which are more watery and the taste isn’t as strong. Both work well and are roughly the same price. I buy them by the box from http://www.dolphinfitness.co.uk which are one of the cheapest for supplements and have a great range of products.

I wouldn’t consume any gels for the first hour of riding then take 1-2 per hour after that to keep your levels topped up, the box says to take up to 4 per hour for high intensity activity. I also find taking a handful of Jaffa Cakes and Rice Crispie Squares are great as they provide lots of energy and are light weight to take in your bag.

It’s also good to stay hydrated with a home-made concoction of: 80% water, 20% fruit juice and 2 pinches of salt, (per 2 ltr).

I got a couple of high 5 gels free at a recent mtbo event, had never tried before but gave one a go and found the taste totally horrible! So tend to avoid. Find that having a few sandwiches and bananas halfway through a ride does me fine and a top up of lucozade nearer the end if I need it πŸ™‚

Strange… I’ve tried many a variety, and particularly recommend the High5 range. IMO they’re the most helpful supplements and aids, on the market πŸ™‚

Don’t forget to tear the top open with your teeth and spit it on the floor and then throw the rest of the packet in the hedge when you have emptied it! This would appear to be the correct procedure for using those things. 😯

I prefer to push the contents down, delicately remove the top, squeeze the gel onto my saddle, open the sachet slightly and place the top inside then put in my bag until a reputable rubbish disposal unit is located.

I would suggest you to have stuff that is natural and at the same time contain a good amount of substances,That is what you should take at the moment and will surely help you in getting what you are looking for right now.

I found that i crashed pretty hard after a gel (whilst still on the ride). I’m gonna keep things natural from now on.
