I have had my Specialized Rockhopper for around 10 months now and have put around 5000 miles on her 🙂 The only work I have so far had to carry out is a new chain and a new cassette so im pretty pleased with the way she is going!
On my ride today though I heard and felt a strange intermittent knocking sound coming from the rear wheel I believe. The bike handles and works just fine but every now and then (a few times per minute) it makes a loud knock/chink mechanical noise, I can feel this reverb through the frame. I have checked the rear wheel and nothing is catching during rotation. The noise does not occur when freewheeling so that cancels out anything to do with the chain and associated moving parts, it got me thinking that perhaps its something to do with the rear hub assembly/bearings? Has anyone had anything similar before?
Tom, have you have the rear wheel out to check the bearings?
Not at the moment, i havent had the time 🙁 I did manage to quickly have a look at the problem yesterday while not riding and it sound and feels like something is building up resistance and the ‘ping’ it will let go making the sound and reverbing through the frame. The issue is still there today although it has quitened somewhat. I plan to clean up and strip down at the weekend in a bid to get to the bottom of it, excluding anything to do with the chain/gear/pedal system i cant think what would be building up resistance when moving, its like a spring being compressed and then randomly letting go to make the ping!? Anyhow the bike is riding fine just now so im hoping its nothing to too serious 🙂
