Mix old with new?

Hi Guys,
Am a Newbie to the forum and trying to get myself back into my old habits.
I had been toying with the idea of getting myself a second bike to use just on the road, when a friend of mine told me that he was selling his bike as he had stripped it down and couldn’t be bothered to rebuild it. So after plenty of bartering I swapped forty hard earned beer tokens for an Orange P1, Pace forks, Alex rims and a big box full of parts.
The rims are on Deore LX hubs and the rear has an 8-speed LX cogset. There are two sets of derailleurs (STX and Acera) and an STX crank. It comes with a set of 7-speed STX shifters and a set of 8-speed shifters, not sure what set they come from thought they are Shimano.
Now is the time to start building it and this is where you come in.
If possible I would like to go old school with the shifters, for me nothing has ever been as good as old early-mid 90’s style thumbshifters. If I got some, say old Deore XT’s, off fleabay could I get them to work with 8 cogs? I know they wont index being originally intended for 7-speed but am not bothered about that?
Thanks

Well I’ve managed to find the answer elsewhere. Don’t believe for a second that no one knew the answer so am guessing you can’t be arsed to reply to newbies!
