I, and most of my workmates, use these; https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/CREE-XML-XM-L-T6-LED-1800-Lumens-Cycle-Bike-Bicycle-Rechargable-Head-Lights-Lamp/281484297610 cheap as chips and subsequently disposable.

Cheers pal, I been looking at those cheap eBay cree t6 lights, exactly the sort of thing I’m after cheap and cheerful and I can chuck em if they die and get another!

Are they bright enough for dark paths?

My commute takes me along canal towpaths, along the river soar and through 2 sets of parks with lakes left by gravel extraction. I use this route year round and in the winter it is as dark as my dads boots. and he is 6feet under.

The worse lamp for me, is a head worn one. especially if it’s coming towards me. there just isnt the facility for the wearers to reduce power or dip or even just look away to avoid dazzling me. I sometimes think i am the only one out there who considers other cyclists and pedestrians.

I have two lamps mounted on an accessory bar one big fluxient aimed forward and one smaller less powerful unit aimed down and to the left. if i see anyone coming toward me i just hit the button on the back of the big lamp and turn it off.

Of course if you are on a trail it is different. I feel you probably need both handlebar mounted to light up the track and a head mounted so you can always see where your head is aimed. Most of us use our heads to steer whether we realise it or not.

Another point to be weary of, Some of these cheap Chinese battery packs and chargers over heat and catch fire.

I have taken a cheap Chinese rechargeable AA battery (bought off fleabay) to bits and under the outer shell lay a AAA size cell and some wadding 😯 😯 😯

Within reason you only get what you pay for. I have run my big Fluxient for 5 seasons now cost me Β£110 that’s Β£22 per season so far, plus i use it on hols and night fishing etc and it shows no signs of giving up any time soon.

i ended up ordering this light for Β£11.50 its worth a try, will definately be keeping an eye on the battery and charger though and if it starts to play up i will buy a decent battery for it but the light looks decent enough, i hope!!

That’s actually not too shabby for the money.

Just don’t put it on strobe mode or I will find you .

    And I will kill you

Echo that about “dodgy Chinese chargers”. πŸ™„ πŸ™„ πŸ™„

I had a similiar version of the above light and was wary of it when on charge, and thankfully so, one time the actual plug in unit decided to start melting from the top, then catching fire…………..luckily I was standing near to it when this happened or dread to think what might have happened.

And the “Strobe” unit is ideal for when approaching people from behind on cycle paths etc., when you don’t have a bell, you don’t need to shout or anything, people certainly know you are coming and are very quick to get out of the way.

Then again, the strobe feature is not ideal for all in front of you.

    Would you agree ?
