    What other hobbies do people have outside of cycling? If you are not out on your bike at a weekend, what do you get up to??

    I am mad about rallying, been going since I was two weeks old! It’s taken me all over the world to go watching and taking photos. I used to be a serious photographer but got fed up of it, these days I am a cameraman for various rally shows that get shown on Motors TV and is really good fun and a great laugh 🙂

    Earlier this year I competed for the first time, on a rally in mid Wales, my friend Geoff came over from Kenya to drive in the event, we did go off in the end (my fault, oops! )

    Anyway, he has just bought a new car and we have put an entry in to do the iconic Safari Rally in two weeks! 😯

    What do you get up to? Running? Gardening? DIY? Reading? Let’s hear it! 🙂

    Used to love watching the R.A.C rally as it passed through Kielder forest way back when…. Those auld Quattro’s breathing hell fire from their exhausts in the middle of the night…and as it passed the old family homestead in the middle of the forest we used to watch it well away from the spectator stages …. where the drivers were really going for it …bit don’t tell anyone !

    These days having been into river and sea kayaking …but left that behind…made my ex missus a squash widow but then packing it in for the sake of my knees aged 40 …other than mtbing it’s badminton ( 6 hrs a week) …ps3 call of duty addict … Bit of air rifle shooting on the in-laws farm, love a book but can’t put them down enjoy a drink but mainly at home . I also love music and was fortunate to work in the industry for a mainstream distributor as a regional manager before the internet changed things .. now that was a hobby and work combined! I love mainly but not exclusively Classic Rock and take real pleasure in sharing these interests with my 11 yr old son ( not the drinking bit) .. I’m an older dad… but he helps me keep a younger outlook on life. At the same time I try to keep the better half happy. I also have an older daughter ( 23) from a previous relationship who is still single and gorgeous. and has done her best to turn me grey before my time 😆

    This and work ( self employed) keeps me more than a little bit occupied!

    Used to watch the RAC, or Lombard when it was using Dalby, Wykeham, or Harewood House, etc… for special stages

    The quatro (as I believe it was initially badged??) was amazing, others of the time were the Opel Mantas (‘Heat For Hire’?), the Chevette HSR, & the Lotus/Chrysler Sunbeams

    Nowadays, my interests are slightly more prosaic;

    Industrial Heritage

    Art-Deco architecture

    Steam railways

    Pack-Horse bridges & salters-routes

    Plus, on the powered front;

    60’s American ‘muscle cars’

    Land Rovers

    TVRs

    Heavy Haulage

    Have always been into off road motorbikes since I was a nipper, dabbled in motocross for a few years but it’s far too expensive to compete at any competitive level, and I’m too old for all that now, so a group of us go ‘green laning’ a few times a year, can easily rack up 100+ miles in a day across the lanes and trails.

    Mine is the kawasaki furthest right.

    Also, having been an 80’s scooter boy and ridden all over the country to various rallies etc, I’ve just bought another vespa after a 24yr break from them, just about got used to the 10″ wheels again!

    There certainly are some quick lambrettas out there, a friend has just built one with an ‘avanti’ engine, never heard of them before but it certainly shifts!

    Meant to reply before but it’s interesting to see the different things people get up to. Never really been into motorbikes as I know that I would fall off and it’d be a hell of a lot sorer than falling off my MTB!!

    We were doing quite well in the rally, were lying 2nd in class! However (there’s always a however isn’t there!) we broke a rear shock on the first stage of the second leg, we then did another 60km of stages before service where the new shocks wouldn’t fit! So we had to go back out on the old ones. The next stage was the best one of the event, we both really enjoyed it and were 32 seconds aster despite the shocks! Sadly though as we pulled off the start line of the next stage the propshaft cried enough and that was us done 🙁

    It’s a shame but I wasn’t too disappointed as it was so enjoyable, plans are afoot to try again next year with a few developments to the car which we only had for a week before starting the rally.

    Wow, you did really well then, considering. Good luck for next year. 😉
