Hi all, ive been a member on here since 2011 but havent been active the last couple of years.
I’m just getting back into mountain biking after about 4 years off.
I’m still using my GT avalanche just now but might finish building the carerra Vulcan frame I bought a few years ago.
looking for advice on whats changed. I’m used to 3×9 is this still ok?
also what groupsets are good value 2nd hand and what tyres people would recommend for trail centres. closest one to me is carron valley.

Why are you building a Vulcan when you already have a very capable hardtail in the Avalanche ?

I’ve had the GT a while. It needs new front forks but I will keep it as a spare as well as the Vulcan.
My plan has always been to build a half decent bike as cheap as I can. Bought the Vulcan frame got it powdercoated. Bought marzocchi forks and got them painted. Bought a few bits and pieces then stopped. Been sitting in the loft so I want to finish what I started.
Wife has a carerra subway she doesn’t use so also have that for cyclepaths with the kids.

That’s a nice bike and well worth upgrading if you don’t sell it
I’ve got a quite soft spot for AV’s and I have built two myself, (although I don’t currently own one at the moment.

I’ve been thinking about it. I’m going to build the carrera first to use for commuting and cycle paths etch to get my fitness up and rebuild/upgrade the GT for trails. Not fit enough to climb just now.

Swapping a capable bike with MTB heritage for a retail park Halfords branded bike ????? 😮
It doesn’t matter what fancy trinkets you put on a Carrera it will still be a Carrera.
For the sake of Sanity stick with the GT,far far far better and worthy of upgrades.

To be honest I’d put my money into the GT and forget the Carrera as the frame will be much more rewarding in the long run.
Whatever you choose, enjoy your rides!

Too late I’ve stripped the GT for it’s parts.
Waiting on a seat post and bottom bracket coming to finish the carrera.
I’m thinking of powdercoating the GT frame and rebuilding with better parts for trail centre use and will put road tyres on the carrera
So how do I find out if a 2 x 10 will fit the GT? What width is a rear wheel with a 10 gear cassette?

Tried to upload pic with last comment but file was too big

Is that a 26 on the back and a 27.5 on the front ??? 😯 😯 😯
- Member29 May 2018 at 11:34 am
No, both 26″ front tyre is 2.3 rear 2.1 but the angle of the bike from wheel is closer to the camera
