Hi, I’ve got a 2008 rockhopper with deore set up…bought it in november last year…

the transmission has been fine on the whole with abit of fine tuning on the cable tension using the nuts at the shifter over the past year

however on my past couple of rides this week i’ve noticed the shifter getting harder and harder to move up into the biggest rear cog, it just gets stiffer and stiffer, and now it doesn’t shift at all into the biggest cog

i’ve had a fettle with the tension of the cable using the nuts and i’ve loosened off the cable at the derailleur pulled out some slack and given it a clean…it was abit dirty…it doesn’t seem to have any kinks or frays or any undue friction in it…

any ideas what the problem is, should i just take it in and get the cables changed? how long do cables last? i guess mine have been in moderate use for a year now…

    thanks for any thoughts….

There are a number of things that it could be and I’ve put a link here for you to have a look through, it should be a great help.

    How long do cables last…………………??????

The cables on my hardtail have been on since about 2002 ish maybe longer and have never needed adjusting, and that bike has done some miles I can tell you.
