    Firstly hello to all on MTBE – looks like a great forum for MTB info

    I have a Mammoth something-or-another MTB (bought on eBay for a reasonable price last year – not an informed buy but more a general use bike)

    Problem is that my 6′ 1″ height means I’ve adjusted the seat height to suit my legs but now my handlebars are too low for comfortable general riding. There is no more stem post for me to raise the stem up. I have seen this on eBay:

    In the meantime, I’ve had a look another at the bike. If I fit an extender, I will surely need a longer hex bolt that holds the forks to the frame (the bolt that goes straight down the length of the stem post ❓

    Well, you could either fit another star nut into the extender, and use the original bolt, relying on the bolts in the clamp of the stem extender to keep it attached to the steerer tube. Or you could fit a longer bolt down to the star nut in the steerer tube of the forks, like you suggested.

    It all depends whether or not you’d feel safe enough with the extender fixed to the steerer just with the clamp bolts.

    Popped down to Halfords 😳 (to pick up a bike carrier) and asked one of the knowledgables there and he informed me that the hex bolt only adjusts for play in the steering bearings and doesn’t hold the forks in place ❓

    Mine came with a longer Allen bolt for the star nut, and I’ve also used some spacers on the steerer so I didn’t have to cut it down.

    I’ve also got riser bars fitted to bring the riding position up even higher and closer, although if you’re a lanky fekker a longer stem might be the answer.

    Just depends what you’re comfortable with.

    This is true. Basically your handlebars can spin freely if that bolt is loosened because it slackens a clamp in the bottom of the handlebars’ shaft (proper term?). When that’s tight, the clamp presses against the inside of the steering tube and thus the wheel turns when the handlebars are turned. The bolt doesn’t actually hold the handlebars directly onto the forks.

    I think the best way to see is if you loosen the bolt right off and pull the handlebars out. Nothing’s gonna fall off, but you’ll at least be able to see the mechanism that holds the bars in place.

    Bit confused here. The top cap/bolt/star nut on my mtbs is used to set the bearings for the headset. This is done with the stem bolts loose. When if feels right I then bolt up my stem and this keeps my forks in place. A hedlock does the same but without the star nut, pulling right the way through the steerer instead.

    Oh, hang on…. I think you may be talking about quill type stem 😕

    Yes, quill. And stem is indeed what I should have said in place of headset. As I mentioned, please stop listening to me =D

    Damned words. I has trouble with dem. Anyways, is what I was thinking of, where the bolt at the top causes the wedge at the bottom to slide across and grid against the steerer tube.
