Myself, Harry, Greg, Vince and John on tonights ride out of Stokesley. 😀

The evening started with Harry fixing Gregs new Ribble in the market place before we set out and headed for Easby, Harry regaling us with his exploits in the Alps. 😀 😀

Through Easby and onto Kildale for a climb up Percy Rigg, at a decent pace.

Then we dropped down into Leven Vale and began the climb up the other side, this is STEEP, and LONG.

Greg and Harry were off and uphill like rats up a drainpipe, whilst Vince and I followed, unfortunately, John was taken by surprise by the climb and struggled with the last section. A fast descent into Hob Hole followed and through the ford for a steep climb out the other side, which again found John struggling.

A super fast descent into Westerdale and then a bit more level riding as we made for Castleton. Another fast descent to Dibble Bridge then another stiff climb to the Commondale road, Johns struggling was becoming progressively worse but he wasn’t prepared to give up. Another fast run into Commondale followed by another climb, Johns rear mech was starting to struggle now as well as his indexing went adrift.

Harry, Vince and Greg went ahead slightly as John and I attacked the last climb up to Percy Rigg, then on the flat after Kildale John was able to recover himself and pick up speed again as we headed back to Stokesley at a fair pace.

One thing was obvious, the ride had taken us a little longer than expected due to the amount of climbing, and the nights are certainly drawing at a pace. 😯 😯

Riding into Stokesley, Harry and the guys were back at the cars and we stopped for a chat before heading off home.

    A nice evenings ride.

    My figures were:

    1 hour 46 min.

    24.8 mile

    13.8 mph

    😉

Great ride and good company. Some sunshine would have been nice but at least it didn’t rain. Excellent route from Gunner and the downhill/flat finish reminded me that I can actually be quite fast on a bike. 😆 😆 😆 😆

Enjoyed last nights ride a lot, cheers lads. To think I was debating whether or not to go beforehand, im glad I made the right choice !

As I said, i’d never doen that route before and enjoyed it all, even the climbing. I still felt in good spirits even after that tw@t in the van sped through the ford and gave us all a good soaking 😆

Thanks again harry, for having a tinker with the Ribble. A few more similar adjustment and hopefully I can get it fully sorted.

Looking forward to more rides when I get back from holiday in a fortnight. 😀

No problem. I reckon it’s 90% there. Another turn or two anti-clockwise and it will be perfect.

I’d also give the rear mech and cassette a good clean (white lightning from Westbrooks is the best stuff to use) and lube them and then it will be running like silk

I hope you are going to get out for Hugos ride to Danby and the Moors Centre at the end of August, you’ll love it, and all the rest of you guys.

Tea and scones at Danby Lodge. 😀 😀

Some photos from last nights ride just to put the climbing into perspective, and give you an idea of why John was beginning to struggle a little on the climbs.

Remember, John’s relatively new to cycling and can keep a good pace on the flat but hills are where fitness is built on the climbs and confidence needs to be found on the descents, and there was plenty of both on this route………….

STILL MANAGING A SMILE AFTER SOME HEAVY DUTY CLIMBING:

John, that’s the spirit. You’ll get out what you put in. And bear in mind that I’m a full-time cyclist so if you want to go out during the week any time if your shifts allow then give me a shout

Agree with Harry there John, you’re at the same level most of the guys were at when they start riding with us, and it’s amazing how quickly they all improve.

And they would all support you and advise you on how they improved if they were out with us at any time.
