While out on our road ride today, near Commondale, I saw the weirdest thing.

A guy on a road bike passed us on the climb out of Commondale, we were slowly riding waiting for a rider to catch up.

He was quite old but obviously very fit, and had what looked like a number on his back……….. 😕 😕

Anyway he zoomed off into the distance and we resumed our ride……….

Then as we began our descent on the Castleton road to Lockwood Beck, the guy appeared again, riding towards the road, from the Moor, the Quakers Causeway to be exact. Now he couldn’t have got far along there, and I’m pretty sure he wasn’t on a cyclo crosser. Now why would he have even attempted to go down there, that trail is bad enough with full suspension but on a road bike or even a “crosser”………….

    Very strange…………. 😕 😕 😕

    Why not?

I’ve taken my old fixed road bike round roseberry topping, the woods and moors before and it was fine and fun.

A brief stint with a proper cross bike made me sure they are ace and fast on everything including technical singletrack but my arms couldn’t cope with the battering so I sold it again.

I’m trying to think of the “original” offroaders who are still going in the Uk but I can’t.

But it looked very much as this guy went past, unless I was “presuming” because of his very roadie gear, that he was on a quite expensive road bike, I am probably wrong I know………..

Maybe, just maybe, he got along the Causeway and turned back once he saw how rough it gets.

I wonder what Hugo and Grant made of it ❓

Had something similar a few years ago in Richmond Park whilst riding to work. Passed a rider with a number on his back on aslope …. ‘Mornin’ …. reply ‘agaragahha’, or similar.

Found out later that there was a triathlon in the park that day 😳 Mind you, if he was a competitor, he was really dogging it! I’ve seen more power in a Trebors Mint!

It was a bit bizarre. He looked pretty serious and was wearing the kit of The House/Chapters road team. I thought he had a standard carbon road bike when he came past and I did think how dirty it was. Not sure what he was doing off road 😕

I thought he was on a Carbon road bike when he passed us, but I didn’t notice the number, or what appeared to look like a number on his back until he was in the distance as I was paying a bit much attention to the bike and he was going it a bit.
