    Hello all,

I’ve just bought my first racing bike and am realising how much more I need to buy before I can ride it – like clothing.

So I’ve looked online and am bewildered by the frankly frightening outfits (bib shorts?) and variety of padded things and creams.

What do I actually need to ride my bike? Padded shorts, under-shorts, a cycling jersey, 3/4 length things for the cold weather…?

What do you wear when road cycling in cooler weather?

    All tips appreciated!

Well I tried a pair of Endura Biblongs recently. All i’ll say is, if you value your bollocks, dont bother 😮

Ah yes, perhaps I should have specified: I do value my bollocks.

Winter kit for me is as follows

Windproof jacket either Altura Night Vision (windproof not waterproof version) or Giordana Windtex Jacket

Icebreaker long sleeve merino wool base layer

    Lusso Bib tights (no pad)

Old pair of bib shorts to go under the tights

Assos winter socks (expensive but very good)

    Endura skull cap

    Pro Vision overshoes

    Altura Nightvision gloves

Glasses with yellow lenses (to make it look sunny even when it isn’t 😉 )

You will find that one of the problems of living in the UK is that you need kit for zero degress in the winter, +20 degress in the summer and all points in between!!

From what I have I would recommend the Altura gloves, Assos socks, Endura skull cap and icebreaker baselayer. The Lusso tights are very good but don’t have a pad so you have to wear shorts under them. I am think of getting some new tights for this winter that have a pad in them. My mate has a Gore Phantom jacket that is excellent (I always wish I had one).

As for other kit then I would think about stuff which is versitile. Arm/knee/leg warmers are very good. I would also recommend a gillet. These will be useful right the way through from spring to autumn.

My shorts have bulky padding, and I can get away with them no probs, but the biblongs are just to bulky and awkward for my liking. Tight around the nads, which means im not relaxed in riding position.

OTOH some people obviously like em though, maybe worth a shot – the general fit and materials of them are ideal for the winter.

Fellas, you know that I worship at the High Church of Assos, right? So if I told you that I’m hugely impressed with wiggle’s DHB Merston bibtights . . . .

For a mere £40 they are unbeatable.

As for winter clothes, the list is pretty endless. I no longer buy any real clothes (haven’t for over a year) but I spend more than any man alive on cycling kit.

See me on the bike and I look like Contador. See me in the street and I look like Wurzel Gummidge on a bad day.

Essentials are overeshoes, bib tights, lightweight waterprrof and a decent warm jacket. Assos Airjack 851 is very expensive but IMHO worth every penny.

Agree with Hugo re Icebreaker merino. There’s merino and there’s icebreaker. Some merino stuff is worse than rubbish.

Are they comfortable where it matters though?

They are not up to the standard of Assos shorts but they are pretty good.

Westbrooks are going to be stocking Skins and 2XU compression stuff soon. I might invest in a pair of them. Both get excellent reviews. Well over a ton though.

I have both the Altura Nightvision Waterproof jacket and the Windproof jacket and find both absolutely excellent.

Iv’e got a nice Peter Storm long sleeve thermal, Roubaix fleece Bib longs, Overshoes and warm gloves, A skullcap for under my helmet and a half decent Craft windcheater.

Need some warm socks (Suggestions please).

Layers work for the top half.

Easy to spend a fortune on gear I find, so do you spend a lot and get good gear that lasts or spend a little and build up bit by bit ???

    Cheers
