    So I just learned that Mustard is still cycling in the snow as am I on my daily commute.

    How many more of us are braving the conditions? My guess is Threvok will be as he has Ice Spiker tyres like my self

    We seem to be crying in the wilderness Magnus, but we could be in for some classic riding conditions, IF the forecast of an extended cold spell turns out right.

    The snow is now fairly thick on most tops ‘oop North, so if it compacts with that super frozen surface texture (part thaw and re-freeze) that can support a bike and rider weight, it could be magical. All we need is a series of bright sunny windless but near freezing days to be able to blast about almost anywhere over them thar hills!

    But of course, by Sod’s Law, what we’ll get is a mini heatwave, and a right soggy bottomless morass of shit, shite, and shacky, with mountain biking cancelled for the duration!

    But lets look on the bright side. Couldn’t somebody sacrifice a few virgins to the weather Gods – assuming any such over the age of twelve can still be found!!

    Yep still riding on the wind farm trails up my way.

    I still have my super knobbly Gazzaloddi’s on which are managing to find the stony gravelly surface underneath as the powdery snow seems to be breaking up under the tyres.

    I dare not go on the mid section 1 mile DH though as it’s mostly hardpack and no amount of tread would hold me in an upright position.

    The rest of it had been fun though 😉 😀

    Nope, far too cold. I’m more of a fair weather rider these, and being cold and wet is now something that avoid while I can

    Commute is a bitch where the cycle-track is concerned

    Slush is too thick for the ice tyres to bite into anything

    For 2+ miles, the back of the Inbred just snakes around

    Good fun though – but very tiring

    Only just built it. The replacement GT Avalanche frame I bought, developed a crack after just a few months.

    I decided no more 2nd hand frames and saw that Planet X where selling end of line 26″ Vertical drop Inbreds off for £149.99, SO I snapped one up. They are all sold out of them now though

    Apart from the Headset and Seat Clamp (which required new) everything transferred across from the GT pretty easily too

    Here it is

    My two bikes are both steel and both 26ers

    The Inbred is my workhorse – like a Swiss Army Knife, whereas the Virtue is more of a Scalpel

    Nice bike Threevok. It’s a pity when new standards (or fads?) totally eclipse the old tried and tested. Many still get a lot of fun out of using bikes which work for them, and feel a sense of pride in doing so.

    It’s a shame that wheel size has to be just one or the other (26 or 29 with compromise 27.5) and we can’t have both still being improved. They offer different strengths and weaknesses for us ‘ordinary’ non world champ users, depending on the type of going.

    I’ve been using my old Stumpy (3×10 gearing) a lot over winter, and though I mostly prefer the 29 Camber (sit in it rather than feeling to be perched over it) the Stumpy was, and still is, a very good and capable ride, and as a bonus, it has proved very tough and durable.

    Who knows, soon retro may start a new wave of fashion and the manufacturers might take making 26er spares more available again. (Anything to make money.) Then, many of the latest fad chasers may take them seriously again. (Nostalgia may rule – stranger things have happened!)

    I have always and always will ride 26ers no matter what so if 26 does make a comeback ,I will be ahead of the fad hunters 😉 🙂

    So if 26 did make a comeback Carnaptious, and sales took off once again, would you say they would need be ‘retro’ (old school) as threevok says he likes, perhaps with old school 3×9/2×10, or did he mean up with the current single chainwheel and huge cassette?

    Or does it really make much difference for normal (average non trail centre use) riders? I still think that the old school bikes and gearing look more pleasing to the eye, and were/are quite capable of performing better than most would really be able to match.

    So should they be as used to be, but with a few valuable updates (through axles etc), or otherwise? I’m not sure how my present older full suss Stumpy could be that much improved, except for just tarting it up with gimmicks for the sake of it!

    Not necessarily Mustard,across the board I would say.

    If a classic double triangle frame is to your liking with all the mod cons then that’s alright by me.

    Personally if I could get a classic frame with all the modern whistles and bells on it(excluding a dropper post) then it would be perfect.

    Alloy,Steel,Front Sus,Full Sus,No Sus,Y Frame,Titanium and everything else in between ?

    As long as it’s got 26″ wheels because that’s MY optimum,not everyone’s.
