XT or SLX?
-
I’ve been looking at getting a new rear mech. I like the look of the Shimano Shadow design. There are two models that I can go for: the SLX or XT at around £37 and £45 respectively. Cheapest prices I’ve found are currently Merlin. I’m after the short cage as will be running it on the Orange with double & bash setup.
Do you think it would be worth going for the XT, at less than £10 more, rather than the SLX?
If anybody knows of a cheaper source please let me know.

At the price difference you quote I’d be tempted to go for the XT, for all the reaons the product description says………….
“SHIMANO SHADOW RD: low profile design intended for more aggressive riding. Quiet: will not contact chain stay. Super low profile design carries many benefits. Because of its low profile and single tension construction = no hitting chain stay in rough conditions. The result is smooth and silent performance.”
And just look at it, it’s gorgeous……………… 😉

They should both do that though as they are both SHADOW RDs.
The XT does look better mind.

Do you have to have the new style XT Sean?
I just got the previous model brand new for £27 from Chain Reaction 😯

Cracking buy as its a great mech!
Edit Looks like they have now run out of short cage though 🙁

Winner!
A shadow is pretty pointless on a 5 as there is no chainstay for it to bang on. (unless they hit the swingarm) Do you often hit rear mechs on stuff from the side?
I’ve managed it once in 18 years.

I’ve only ever clonked a rear mech a couple of times and not hard enough to do any real damage. The price of the shadow is the same as regular on the XT models so might as well have one I thought.

Aye in that case then you might as well.
I’d go for the long cage as I’m a cheapskate ;0)
Oh and if you want rapidrise they tend to be cheaper…

LOL 😆 I would do mate but I’m retiring the same model. Going to swap the LX off the Orange onto the hardtail, its newer and virtually the same as old XT.
Just fitted a Deore crankset to the DMR and its exactly the same as the old XT set on the Orange. It was only £45! 😯

Just bought the XT Shadow GS for £34.25!! 😯
J E James got (upto) 50% off Shimano products. 😀

Only just received the rear mech today, good job I wasn’t in a hurry for it!
Just as well, coz its going back. They sent me the SGS (long cage) by mistake. I’m going to have to faff about getting it back to them now. 🙁
-
Did they say they were out of stock? I would be a bit miffed by that 👿
In contrast, after my mishap on Friday where my RH shifter mech fell apart and got run over 😕 I ordered a pair of Deore 9 speed ones from Merlin (only £25) at 12 noon on Friday and they had arrived by 10am on Saturday with no charge for postage either. Brilliant service!!
